In his photographs, Asaf Einy examines the photographic portrait as a potential for movement on the continuum between the familiar and the strange as he turns his gaze to models from the social and political margins in Israel.
His works consist of series of portraits, cityscapes, and objects that correspond to familiar representations and exist on the verge of reduction to stereotype. They examine the fine line between clichéd representation of identities and the ability of a specific subject and object to transcend the hierarchical array of forces and come to life as a concrete, singular self-image.
Looking at it, the photographs are in a constant attempt to transcend into the exotic - on the one hand, they convey stagnation and boredom, and on the other, they are fantastic.
